Restaurants always have leftover (剩下的) food. Paul Winters and the other four eighth-graders from Capital Day School in the United States worked out an app to deal with it successfully.
Living not far from school, he walked and met many homeless people when he passed each morning after meals. Paul had a "soft spot" in his heart. It was very necessary to do something helpful for them! During a trip to Chicago, he and his friends saw a lot of homeless people begging. They gave their leftovers from breakfast to a homeless man. The man was very thankful. That gave them the idea to make an app to help the homeless. And at the same time they thought of the leftover food produced (产生) by the hotels and restaurants. Jared Winters is one of the app's makers. His grandfather buys a pizza for him every Friday night, and he knows there are many pizzas left at pizza stores as well.
Waste Free America soon came out. It tells homeless people if restaurants within 16 kilometers of them have leftover food. It won a national app design competition in the US. The prize was $20,000 (130,000 yuan) and tickets to Orlando, Florida. And they gave away half of the money to the homeless.
In the coming months, they will work on the app with some engineers (工程师). In June, they will show their app to people in Orlando.
