What are"good boys"and"good girls"? According to most teachers at school, they should be active, positive, honest and study hard. But do the kids think the same as their teachers? Students of Class 123, Xinhua High School is holding a class meeting on the question to search for"good kids"in their class. Many students are excited to express their different ideas.

Liu Ping thinks his classmate Wang Jia is a good boy because Wang is very responsible.As the monitor, Wang takes care of everybody. Once Liu broke his leg and didn't go to school for a week. It was Wang who brought him class notes every day."I was deeply moved."said Liu. "If he is not a good boy, then who can be?"

Li Hong, a 14-year-old girl used to be crazy about playing computer games until she met her new deskmate Zhang Hao. Zhang is quiet and likes reading. He often shares good books with Li and helps her study. Now she has stopped playing computer games and has decided to become a top student like Zhang.

In Lin Li's mind, however, she herself is a good girl. She said she didn't always get good marks in tests. But her parents seldom blamed her. "I told them I had tried my best and they believed me."she said. "Everyone has weak points in different aspects(方面). Those who make every effort whether in study or life should be regarded as‘good'."added she.

What do you think a"good"student is?

①Chinese calligraphy (书法) was once considered an important part of the school curriculum (课程). However, for many reasons, some people think it's less important to teach this art form at school now. In this article, I will look at both the pros and cons of learning Chinese calligraphy at school.

②One reason why Chinese calligraphy should be learned at school is that it is an important form of culture expression. Clearly, it is not just about practicing handwriting. It is also about connecting with a traditional Chinese art form. When students learn this art in class, they will become more interested in the works of famous Chinese artists.

③Another reason is that it may help students to develop patience. At the times of high technology, students are getting less patient for traditional classroom learning. By introducing Chinese calligraphy into the classroom, students' patience can be improved because they have to practice focusing on each brush movement.

▲    . However, others think there are some disadvantages. The first one is that it has little to do with students' life. Living in a modern age, pens and paper will lose their importance by and by. So, wouldn't it be a backward step if students were asked to spend their valuable time at school learning Chinese calligraphy?

⑤The second argument against learning Chinese calligraphy at school is that it takes a long time to master. The time at school is better spent on more important subjects. After all, learning Chinese calligraphy can always be done as an after-school activity if students are really interested in it.

⑥In my opinion, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. This special art form is one of China's national treasures, It also helps to enrich students' life and improve their sense of beauty. So without doubt, it is worth being included in the school curriculum.

The University of Oxford is famous as a teaching and research center. It's believed that teaching existed in Oxford as early as 1096, and it has been regarded as the top university in the UK by The Timesfor many times.

The Tutorial (导师的) System

In the University of Oxford, teaching is mainly through the tutorial system. Tutorials can help improve students' skills of critical thinking, but the greatest advantage of the tutorial system is the individual guidance that students receive. There is clear difference between tutorials and large lectures common in the American universities. In the traditional American university, students are taught by the same teacher, in the same way, and expected to achieve the same learning goals.

Societies and Clubs

There are rich after-school activities at Oxford. Students may join different clubs and societies according to their own interests. The Oxford University Scientific Society aims to bring together undergraduates to discuss scientific matters. The Oxford Union Society is famous for its debate. The Newman Society has been as a model for religious society throughout the English-speaking world. In addition, there are a great many clubs, including Oxford University Cricket Club, Oxford University Chess Club, and so on.

In your spare time, do you help your parents with chores (杂活)around the house? Can you cook for your family?

In order to stress (强调) the importance of hard-working spirit education (劳动教育) among students of different ages, the Communist Party of China Central Committee(中共中央) recently released( 发布) a guideline (指导纲要).

The guideline calls for students to respect labor work. Students should learn basic life skills and form good working habits through such education.

The government has been trying to stress the importance of hard-working spirit education. But this has been overlooked(忽视) in recent years. Many teenagers do not value the importance of working hard and aren't interested in doing so.

According to a study of nearly 3,000 students that was done by Ningbo Evening News in March, only 22% of students help with everyday chores around the house.

Schools and families play an important role in teaching students about the value of working hard, the guideline says.

Primary and middle schools should provide students with hard-working spirit classes every week, according to the guideline. Schools can also hold activities to give students real-world work experience. For example, schools can teach children how to plant trees on Tree-Planting Day.

As children's first teachers, parents should also encourage children to learn how to do chores at home. Students should master one or two life skills every year. These skills can include cooking, washing their own clothes and tidying their rooms.

Why are your study habits different from those of your friends? Why do you seem to learn faster in some classes while more slowly in others? One reason you may not know is that people have different learning types. Scientists say there are three different learning types:Visual, Auditory(听觉型) and Kin esthetic(动觉型).

Visual learners learn best by seeing. If you seem to easily remember information from pictures, graphs(图表) and videos, you are probably a visual learner. You are not good at copying down what the teacher says in class. Never mind. You can draw graphs or pictures instead, if you find that works better for you.

Auditory learners learn best by hearing. If you seem to easily remember things by hearing them, then you are probably an auditory learner. You must listen carefully while the teacher is speaking because it's the easiest way for you to learn. Sometimes you may find that taking notes stops you from listening carefully. After class, you can write down what you remember or borrow your friends' notes to copy.

Kin esthetic learners learn best by doing. If you seem to learn best by working with your hands, you are probably a kin esthetic learner. Taking notes by writing can make you pay close attention to information as you receive it. Of course, you can learn best by making full use of labs or other class activities.

Hope you learn better by knowing what your personal learning type is.

Teachers have always had to face the problem of students cheating, whether in a public school or a private school, whether among the low-achieving students or ‘straight A' students. Why do students cheat?

The main reason that students cheat is the high pressure from family. Students want their parents or grandparents to feel proud of them, or at least not to be disappointed in them. Another main reason is that it's likely to get the correct answer rather than considering student's abilities in school. As a result, what students care most is only scores. In addition, some students cheat simply because they're busy or lazy.

Cheating can help you get ahead when it works and it is easy to do. The cheaters get good grades without spending much time studying. Some people think cheating makes difficult things seem easy. Cheating is a way for them to win and get what they want now. Honor and dishonor are meaningless if they win. They easily see the advantages in cheating, but often ignore the dangers in playing by their own rules instead of society's.

Cheating successfully once often leads to cheating again and again. It can quickly become a habit that turns into a lifestyle. Without cheating , cheaters become afraid of failure. That is to say, it prevents the student from getting the chance to experience the achieving process. What's more, student who cheat may feel worried about getting caught, whether they are caught or not. These kids may feel guilty or embarrassed. Research has shown that not being able to experience trying hard directly affects one's self-confidence. Research has also shown that low self-esteem is the main cause of sadness.

So cheating is like using drugs——it feels good at the moment but it has rather bad effects. The best way to teach our students is to put cheating out of their mind and love learning truly, to help them experience the satisfaction that comes from the knowledge as well as the self-confidence. There's an old saying that characters never win and winners never cheat. Kids who don't cheat are true winners. Because when they win, they do it honestly.
