From this July, people in Shanghai are being asked to sort (分类) their garbage (垃圾). They must put their garbage in different boxes to improve the city's environment.

Until now, a lot of garbage has been put into one place. The garbage is then taken to landfill sites (垃圾填满场). These landfill sites, however, can be bad for the land and water.

The new plan asks people to put their garbage into different boxes, one for each kind of garbage. The brown one is for 'wet garbage' (such as food waste). The red one is for harmful waste (such as the medicine). The blue one is for recyclable waste (such as paper and clothes). And finally, the black one is for "dry garbage" (covers many things, such as pencils.)

Each day, Shanghai produces 22,000 tons of household garbage. If you put it together, it will be the same as a big building! Reducing that amount will surely help the environment. However, it needs all the people to make it happen. Just as Shanghai's mayor, Ying Yong, has said, "Garbage sorting should become the most popular thing. ______________, I hope everyone can take part in."
