Laura loves contests(竞赛). She likes to win(赢).
"OK, everyone." Mr. Perkins says, "we need a class leader (班长) for each month. He or she needs to choose a theme (选择一个主题) for the class activity that month."
"It is a contest! I must win!" thinks Laura.
"The class leader will do a lot of things," Mr. Perkins says. "Who wants to be the class leader? Put up your hands."
Laura puts up her hand first. Michael, Ken, Zoe, Melissa and Berry put up their hands, too. Mr. Perkins writes their names on the blackboard.
"I have a great idea for the class activity," Melissa says to her deskmate.
Laura hears Melissa's words. Melissa doesn't just want to win. She wants to help the class.
"Who do you want to be this month's class leader? Why?" asks Mr. Perkins.
"I think Melissa will be a good class leader," says Laura. "She has a great idea for the class activity, and she always helps."
"Thanks," Melissa says. "But I think you want to be the class leader."
"Next month, I think." says Laura.
