As a famouschef(厨师),Joyce Chen helped introduce Chinese food to the American public. Her photo was included on a US stamp in 2014. And a "Festival of Dumplings" is held in Cambridge, USA every year to celebrate her birthday.
Chen was born on September 14, 1917 in Beijing, China. Chen learned about Chinese food simply by watching her family chef cook in the home kitchen. By the time she was 18. she cooked her first professional dinner.
In 1949, Chen and her family moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. There she would often cook food for her children's school events. This isinspired(激励) Chen to open her first restaurant in 1958. called "Joyce Chen Restaurant". At this restaurant. she served both Chinese and American dishes to encourage to try new foods.
Later Chen began teaching cooking classes, The. cookbook taught people how to use chopsticks, the importance of tea,and many other important Chinese traditions.Her cookbook turned out a big success.
In 1967, Chen opened her second restaurant. That same year,Chenstarred(担任主角)inJoyce Chen Cooks, her own cooking show that spread worldwide. She opened two larger "Joyce Chen Restaurants" in1969 and 1973. On August 23, 1994, she died in Lexington, Kentucky at the age of 76.
