The first cartoons appeared in newspapers. They told (story) using pictures. In the film, an artist (draw) pictures of two faces on a blackboard. The faces came to life. They smiled and a small dog jumped through a ring.
There were lots of animals in early cartoons. Walt Disney started to make films in 1920s. Some of (he) earliest films were about a famous story, Alice in Wonderland, in Disney's films it was called Alice in Cartoon Land. One of the most famous cartoon characters (be) Mickey Mouse. He appeared in 1928, first in a black-and-white film (with) sound, then very soon after that in a talking film and then in colour.
Today, hundreds of years (late), people of all ages can't help (enjoy) cartoons. They will (probable) be popular for many more years in the future.
