Chinese delivery driver, Gao Zhixiao, appeared on the cover of Time magazine in March because of his great sense of duty. Alongside five others, he was picked by the magazine as one of the heroes during thenovel coronavirus(新冠肺炎) outbreak.
After COVID-19 broke out, many restaurants turned to takeout-only services. Millions of people have been staying home to avoid gettinginfected(感染的). "People choose to order food online or buy fruit and vegetables to cook at home," Gao told Time. As a result, delivery ordersdramatically(显著地) increased, placing a huge burden ondelivery couriers(派送员).
Born into a poor family in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, Gao started to make a living in Beijing at the age of 16. After the novel coronavirus broke out, Gao thought for a second whether to continue working, but then picked up orders because he thought customers might be in need.
In order to keep off the danger of person-to-persontransmission(传播), Gao must takeprecautions(预防措施) to avoid spreading viruses during his route around Beijing, including taking a regular health test and spending 20 minutesdisinfecting(消毒) his motorcycle and clothes each morning. Besides delivering goods, Gao once warm-heartedly cooked for an elderlycustomer(顾客) who was living alone at her home.
It is the commitment of ordinary people like Gao who have made the biggest contributions in the fight against COVID-19.
