Chongqing, a city of more than 32 million people, faced a test this summer. A heat wave and drought caused several large wildfires since Aug 17.
More than 14 thousand people have joined this war, including firefighters, soldiers, and professional teams, as well as helicopters have been sent to put out the fires.
Local(当地的) people also joined the war to protect their hometown in every way possible. Thousands of volunteers from all walks of life fought the fires with professionals(专业人员).
Under a scorching sun, people in Chongqing used chain saws(电锯) tofelltrees. It can stop more trees from catching fire. Others rode motorcycles on narrow paths to take firefighters and supplies( 补 给 ) up a mountain, while some volunteers carried food and drinks on their backs on foot. Women and children are not waiting at home, either. They helped send supplies and clear the ground.
On Thursday night, as wildfires reached a man—made barrier( 障 碍 ) on Jinyun Mountain in Beibei district, a total of more than 1, 000 firefighters and volunteers stood alongside the barrier with fire extinguishers(灭火器). Seen from overhead, their lights built a silver wall against the red fire line.
Zou Yu, from the Chongqing Emergency Management Bureau, said by Friday morning, the wildfires in the city had all been put out.
