In our school, the milk for lunch is from a farm. It is about half a mile from the school. Every day, two boys leave school to get it for our class.
Every Friday afternoon, the teacher, Miss Ralston chooses two boys to take the job.
This Friday afternoon, Miss Ralston comes into the classroom. She asks, "Who wants to get the milk next week, boys?"
Alma puts up her hand and asks, "_________" Every student is surprised.
Miss Ralston looks at Alma and answers, "I'll tell you later."
The boys don't want to lose their job. It is a difficult job, because they have to walk for half an hour. But they can also go outside and have fun. It's the happiest time for them.
So, after the class, the boys start to make school life difficult for Alma and other girls. They don't let the girls play softball.
After seeing this, Miss Ralston goes to the playground and takes the bat away from a boy. "Come on!" She shouts for a pitch. She throws the ball high into the air. The big boy can't catch the ball and it flies across the playground. She says. "See? Girls can also play softball well."
"Next week. Alma and Joyce will go for milk," Miss Ralston says to all the students.
After that Friday afternoon, girls can go to get the milk like boys, too.
