Tom was a middle﹣aged businessman who failed in his work many times, which made him a sod man, often complaining(抱怨)that others had been playing tricks(玩笑)on him. One day he told his wife he was so disappointed with the city that he had to leave. So his family moved to another city.
It was on the evening of a weekend when Tom and his wife were busy cleaning up their new house that the light suddenly went out. So they had to stop working. Because Tom had forgotten to bring along candles, he had to wait helplessly.
Just then he heard knocks on his door. "Who's it?" he wondered, since Tom had no friends in the new city. And this was the moment he especially disliked being troubled. So, he opened the door impatiently. At the door was a little girl, shyly asking. "Sir, do you have candles? I'm your neighbor. ""No!" Tom answered angrily and shut the door strongly. He complained to his wife about it, "As soon as we moved, the neighbor came to borrow things."
After a while, the door was knocked again. He opened it and found the same girl outside. But this time she was holding two candles, saying, "My grandma told me the new neighbor downstairs might need candles. She sent me here to give you these. "Tom was very surprised and said, "Thank you and your grandma!"
At that moment, he suddenly realized what made him fail in life. It was his coldness and unkindness to other people. The person who had cheated him in life was in fact nobody else but himself.
