Laoshe is one of the greatest Chinese writers. He was named "the People's Artist. " He was born in Beijing in 1899. His mother sent him to a teacher-training school in 1913. In 1924, Laoshe left China for England. He taught Chinese at a college in London and he came back to China in 1929.
He wrote many plays, novels and short stories about people's lives. Teahouse is one of Laoshe's most famous plays. It was written in 1957. The play shows the daily lives of the common people in China from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. It tells us the story of Wang Lifa and the customers of his teahouse in Beijing. It describes the changes in Chinese society over fifty years.
