Do you remember the elephant "tour group" in Yunnan? Where are they now? They are back at their home!
In March, 2020, a family of 15 wild Asian elephants left their living place in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province. They kept going north, through mountains, forests, rivers and even city streets. Along their journey, they ran into villages and ate farmers" corn. But no one blamed(h怪)them. "It is OK. They are just hungry," a farmer said.
Scientists guessed that the elephants were losing their habitat, so they might go north to look for a new home with more food. Or the group might lose its way because its leader had no experience!
To help the elephants get home and protect them, the government used 76 police cars and trucks, as well as nine drones(无人机). Police and scientists closely watched them. They watched the group's movement and sent warnings(警示)to people on the road not to get close to the elephants. They also helped them with food and drink. Finally, the elephants ended their trip safely and happily after 17 months and a 500-kilometer journey.
The Asian elephant is the largest land animal in Asia. Yunnan is the only habitat for wild Asian elephants in China. The province has built 11 nature reserves. However, there are only 300 Asian elephants left in China. The WWF is working hard to save them.
