Dawson was an old man who often became angry with kids. Everyone knew it. He had the best apples in town. When kids came to pick apples, he would get angry and came after them.

One Friday, Cindy and Kelly was going to Kelly's house. On the way, they walked by Dawson's house. Cindy saw Dawson sitting in front of his house. Like most kids, Cindy was afraid of him, so she suggested they should cross over to the other side of the street. But Kelly said Dawson wouldn't hurt them and kept walking. When they got close, Dawson looked up angrily. But when he saw Kelly, he smiled and said, "Hello, Kelly. I see you've got a friend with you today. " Kelly smiled back and told him Cindy was coming to her house and play games. "It sounds pretty good. " Dawson said and then gave them each a fresh apple.

They walked on for a while, and then Cindy asked Kelly, "Why is he so nice to us today?" Kelly said, "When I first walked by his house, he wasn't friendly and I was afraid. But then I pretended he was wearing an invisible(看不见的) smile, so I smiled at him. Then every time I walked by, I smiled at him. It took a while but one day, he smiled back at me. " "An invisible smile?" asked Cindy. "Yes. " answered Kelly, "My grandma told me if I pretended someone gave me an invisible smile, and I smiled back, then sooner or later, he would really smile. "
