The oil- paper umbrella has a history of over 1, 000 years in China. There are different s about it. The most popular one is about Lu Ban. 

When Lu Ban and his younger sister visited the West Lake, it started raining suddenly. They agreed to have a competition. They should i something for people to go out on rainy days. 

Lu Ban spent the whole night building ten pavilions（凉亭）near the lake. The next morning, however, when Lu Ban was p of his achievements, his sister held something unusual in her hand. It could be opened into a round shape. It was light and beautiful, so people could carry it e wherever they went. 

Lu Ban said, "You've solved the problem wisely, so you w the competition. " Then the umbrella was made and it received a lot of praise from people. 

Later, people used much cheaper paper instead of silk, cutting the cost of umbrellas. People also brushed tung oil（桐油）across the surface to make them strong.
