Katherine Commale is a 12-year-old girl from Pennsylvania. At the age of five, she learnt that Africa malaria (疟疾) killed a child every 45 seconds. She also learnt that people wouldn't get malaria if they slept in a bed net (蚊帐). The cost of a bed net (be) 10 dollars at that time.
"It made me (sad) to know about those poor children," Katherine says. "I wanted (raise) money to buy bed nets for African Children." So she had a good idea.
Five-year-old Katherine (make) speeches at churches and schools. She showed people how important bed nets were for African families. After (listen)to her speeches, many people donated (捐献) money. Katherine sent the money to Nothing But Nets. That organization sent bed nets to Africa.
Besides, Katherine had good idea soon. She decided to make gift certificates (礼券 )to sell for the Christmas holiday. On each 10-dollar certificate there was message. It explained that a bed net would be sent to Africa. With the help of (she) brother and friends, she got more and more certificate orders.
Katherine has helped raise more than $200,000 for Nothing But Nets.
"It makes me happy to help African children," says Katherine. "I won't stop (work) until everyone in Africa has a bed net."
