Music is the one incorporeal (无形的) entrance into the higher world of knowledge which comprehends mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend mankind but which mankind cannot comprehend," said famous German pianist and composer Ludwig van Beethoven. This year marks the 251th anniversary of Beethoven's birth on Dec 17,1770 As one of the fathers of classical music, Beethoven was revolutionary, breaking the rules and stretching musical forms to unleash (释放) emotion.

Although some may claim that classical is a dying art only for the elites (精英人士),it is actually alive and well in the modern era. It's not uncommon for today's musicians to have grown up playing classical instruments such as the violin or piano. Even those who don't play or listen to classical music are likely to have been introduced to it through movies and even video games.

Many or the most recognizable names in the music industry have drawn inspiration from classical music. UK legendary rock band The Beatles is one of them. John Lemon, while lying on his couch listening to his wife play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on the piano, asked her to play it backward and was immediately inspired to write the songBecause. The song itself is similar to Moonlight Sonata with simple, straightforward lyrics.

This is just one example. Countless musicians have been influenced by Beethoven, and classical music as a whole. Record producer George Marin once said: "They always had enormous confidence that the world was theirs for the taking." This quote seems to sum up not only the mentality of more modem era musicians, butthatof those classical artists who formed the building blocks of music today. They were making a bold, grandiose (浮夸的) and very innovative statement, not holding anything back.

Whether you're a music scholar or a passive listener, you can't deny that classical musicians' influence remains strong centuries after the artists have passed. Musicians like Beethoven continue illustrate their impact on the unifying force that is music.

Multiple actions have been taken to fight food waste, but one young man is making a big difference with technology.

Liu Jichen, 23, a student from Tsinghua University, has developed a WeChat mini-program called "Clear Your Plate". After a meal, users can open the mini-program and take a picture of their empty plates. Once the image recognized by the AI, users can collect points and use them to buy gifts or purchase charity meals donated to children in impoverished (贫困的) rural areas.

"Technological innovation is a good way to reduce food waste," Liu thought. He organized a team of 20 members to work on the project at the end of 2017. To solve the AI's problem of identifying photos of empty plates, the team spent half a year collecting over 100,000 samples in canteens and restaurants. In 2018, the mini-program was officially put into operation on Oct 16, World Food Day.

"There were so many unknowns in research and development. For our team members, the biggest psychological challenge was whether we were confident enough to complete it," Liu said. They not only achieved their goal, but mow, the mini-program has more than 5 million registered users, according to Liu.

Thanks to his innovative and practical actions concerning social issues, Liu, along with the other 16 members, stood out among more than 7,600 candidates around the world to be inducted (入选) into the 2020 Class of Young Leaders for the Sustainable Development Goals by the UN Office of the Secretary General's Envoy on Youth in September.

"We hope our efforts can start a new trend among the younger generation by encouraging them to cherish their food and develop the habit of thrift (节约)," Liu told China Daily. "We hope to inspire everyone to take action against food waste and to contribute Chinese wisdom and solutions to global food security challenges," he added.

It could be said that the northernmost part of our planet holds the secrets of our past as well as our future.

The icy land is, in fact, not a place for the weak. This vast land of wilderness is where people can get up close to nature's extremes. The place is "no joke", US photographer Mark Mahaney told PLAIN Magazine. "When midnight sun is replaced by polar night, everything's different Eyes to the horizon and it's nothing. And then more nothing, in every direction. "

One of the most harsh, yet most pristine (原始的) places on Earth, the Arctic has been affected by human activities-exploration, booming tourism and most importantly, global warming-in recent decades.

But the impact of these changes is not restricted to the inhabitants of this area alone. In fact, it could be said that the weight of the world relies on this icy region.

The Earth's steady climate depends on the Arctic's sea ice, which acts as a huge white reflector at the top of the planet, bouncing some of the sun's rays back into space. The more Arctic sea ice melts, the less light is reflected, and the more the dark oceans will absorb the sun's radiation. The Arctic also helps circulate ocean currents, moving cold and warm water around the globe.

With visible changes in the global climate, the Arctic has given us a wake-up call-what happens up in the North doesn't just stay there. It comes with a high cost to the world at large. It's time for us to pay attention to this chilly region and learn more about what's happening there, as well as its past and possible future.
