That Saturday was significant only in hindsight(事后聪明). It was 6November2010, and it was a training day for my school's new journalism team. The teacher advised me to start a blog to get into writing. Bored and in need of a project, I set up a Blogger account at home.

As I typed post after badly written post in the months that followed, my computer was filled with the beginning of novels, half-finished song lyrics(歌词), and the odd poem—things I'd Started in k a fit of teenage enthusiasm only to be let down by my lack of creativity. But somehow writing about the news and myself seemed easier. I loved finding just the right phrase to express my feelings.

It had, to say the least, not been a good year. I became increasingly lonely as my peers(同龄人) went to parties while my disability kept me at home after school. My care r of five years had just walked out of my life with no real explanation as to why. This threw me info front of the fact that I couldn't just ignore the reality of being disabled and hope everything would be fine. I was stuck trying to find a new way to approach life.

There were so many things I couldn't do——or, at least, I told myself I couldn't. But there was something that required only a computer and an idea, something that my disability couldn't make difficult as it did to everything else: I could write. After many painful years of shyness, I found I had a voice--clear,confident and mine. It wasn't long until my mind was made up: I was going to be a journalist.

Seven years later, I am. I've never been so happy that my younger self listened to the advice that turned out to matter most. Though I don't publish much on my blog these days, I still go back to it when I have something I desperately(极度地) need to say. Because no matter how long it's been, my blog still gives me the same thing it did on that very first day: somewhere to go, all of my own.

When we single out those we believe to be exceptional, we create a culture of genius. This is an environment where star performers get the most resources and where the basic bē lief is the fixed mindset: Some have it, and some don't. Once you single out children as exceptional, you put them on a pedestal(受人尊敬的地位)—one they often become afraid of falling off. Additionally, those labeled as gifted tend to possess a narrow set of skills. This affects their long-term development.

In contrast, in cultures of growth, the central belief is the growth mindset—a belief in universal potential(普遍的潜能): Everyone has the ability to grow, learn, and contribute from wherever they are. In cultures of growth, everyone receives the necessary resources and instruction to develop, Cultures of growth nurture(培养) everyone based on their needs and abilities.

We all have the power to create cultures of growth in our families, schools, and workplaces by holding the belief that everyone can learn and contribute, and by supporting one another on the path to success. Because we know that it's in cultures of growth where the real genius lies.

Organic(不使用化肥的) farmers produce food with least help from pesticides(杀虫剂),but in limiting the use of chemicals on their own land, they may be unknowingly causing an increase in pesticide use over their neighbour's fence(栅栏).

Ashley Larsen at the University of California and her colleagues looked into land-use and pesticide data across 14,000 fields in Kern County, California. The researchers found that when organic farmland is surrounded by conventional (传统的) agriculture, neighbouring farmers seem to increase their pest í cide use, with a 10% rise in organic cropland being linked to a 0.3% increase in total pesticide use on conventional fields. Most of this is driven by greater use of pesticides, the researchers found.

This may be because more insects tend to live on organic land and spill over into neighbouring fields, causing conventional farmers there to increase pesticide use, according to larsen. The effect appears strongest when neighbouring fields are within 2. 5 kilometres of the organic "focal field" .

However, the researchers noted that the presence of organic farmland is linked to a reduction in pesticide use on neighbouring organic fields, with a 10% increase in the area of nearby organic cropland being related to a 3% decrease in total pesticide use on organic focal fields. This may be because the larger area of organic farmland allows for a bigger and more stable(稳定的) community of beneficial insects.

When organic agriculture makes up a high rate of farmland———perhaps 20% or more——net pesticide use decreases no matter where the organic fields are sited, say the researchers. But when small areas of organic farmland—like in Kern County, where about 5.5% of agricultural land is organic--evenly spread through the landscape, net pesticide use may in fact be higher than when no organic farming is present.

However, this impact can be softened by bunching up organic farmland. Larsen said, "It might be worth considering how to encourage the concentration of new organic fields to basically take full advantage of its pest control benefits and limit the costs of being organic to conventional growers."

I was alone, so I couldn't leave the store to help out. Then I called ray parents. I knew that they were busy preparing the big dinner for the whole family. I explained about the young man and asked them if they could help him out. Without any hesitation, they agreed.

After a short while, I saw my parents' car. It stopped beside the young man and there was a quick exchange of words. The man nodded his head thankfully, and then the car drove off. I saw the look of surprise, disbelief, gratitude, and pleasure that I would never forget appeared on the face of the young man.
