A girl who graduated from a world famous university wanted to do translation work for authority leaders. She was so happy when she entered the British Embassy (大使馆). She thought it was the greatest happiness in her life as many graduates wanted to get that job and she was one of the few people who got it!

But when she started her new job, she realized that it was just a job of answering calls and recording staff members' arriving and leaving times. It was supposed to have no future. For some time, she felt disappointed and didn't know what to do. However, she didn't want to give up this job. She thought about it for one or two days and finally she decided that she would try her best to do this job. From then on, she learnt to appreciate her own job. She wrote down the names and phone numbers of the staff members on a notebook so that he could rememberthem. She found great pleasure in dealing with the daily chores. When a phone call came in, she picked up the phone as soon as possible. When someone asked her about who was not in the office, she would give the right name and even the time when he or she left. Nobody could do that except her.

Her excellent work received praise not only from the embassy's members, but also from people in the local government. A leader of a famous company in Britain was deeply impressed by her, so he invited her to work for him. After that she became the leader's personal translator and she was appreciated by the foreigners.

We cannot choose our destiny (命运), but we can choose the attitude with which we face our life. Maybe me attitude could change our destiny.

Not so long ago, people lived in big families. Children grew up knowing their cousins, aunts and uncles, grandparents, and other relatives. These children felt connected.

At that time, people were connected to their food. Most people grew their own vegetables and fruit. Many families had a house cow for milk, cheese, butter and cream. Most families also had meat animals. When visitors came unexpectedly, dad would be sent to kill the chook (鸡) for dinner. Everyone helped with cooking and mealtimes were a social event. When the meal ended, most of the families cleaned up and washed up together. But how different is the situation today?

The fast life is all around us—fast food, fast cars, fast conversations, fast families, fast holidays. Our fast-paced life has weakened these connections. We have been fooled into thinking we need to, or even must, be fast and have what the "fast life" gives us.Stress is leading to many new health problems.

The way to solve the problem is the Slow Movement. It aims to deal with the problem of "time poverty (缺乏)" through making connections. It supports a growing cultural change towards slowing down. It has spread to more than sixty countries and become a worldwide movement.

The Slow Movement tells us that we need to slow down and connect with our life. We need connection to people—ourselves, our family, our community, our friends—to food, to place (where we live), and to life.

By being part of the Slow Movement, many people have known how they lost connection to most sides of their lives and to the natural world and rhythms (节奏) around them. And more importantly, they have reconnected—they have lived a new connected lifestyle.

阅读下列短文,从下面每小题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

All people need to sleep. Sleeping is a restorative (恢复体力的) process that shapes better body functions and can improve the quality of your life. Not only is the quantity of sleep important, but also the quality of sleep.

Your bedroom should be shaped to your taste and to allow you to sleep in a peaceful environment. One of the biggest mistakes people make in their sleep is to use their bedroom for activities other than sleep. If your bedroom is also used as a place for your life and work, you will probably have a poor sleep. Bedrooms should be designed and used for sleep mainly. TVs, computers and other things should not be in your bedroom at all if possible.

The regular sleeping and waking times can help improve the quality of your sleep especially for those suffering from sleeplessness. Avoid hot food, caffeine, sugar and alcohol at least 4 to 6 hours before your sleep time. Develop a regular exercise programme. Proper exercise and healthy food will help improve sleeping quality. However, avoid exercising 2 hours before sleeping, since this may keep your body exciting and make sleeping more difficult.

A pre-bedtime rule will help you focus on sleep. You can try meditation (沉思), reading or deep breathing and relaxation. Your bedtime rule should be yours. Do not worry about it fitting into a special style. Do what is the best for you.

Things such as room temperature, noise and light levels and even your bed itself can have a lot of effect on the quality of sleep that you experience. Cut down the annoying noises and lights. You are in your bedroom to sleep and not be distracted (干扰) by environment.

阅读下列短文,从下面每小题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

There was once a little grey planet mat was very sad. The people living there didn't look after it. They polluted me whole planet so much with rubbish that there were no plants or animals left.

One day, a little boy was walking on the planet when he passed a cave (洞穴) and noticed a small red flower inside. The flower was very sick, almost dying, so the boy carefully dug up the flower with roots, soil and everything. Then he started looking for a place where he could look after it. He searched all over the planet, but everywhere was so polluted that there was no place the flower could possibly live in. Then he looked up at the sky and noticed the Moon. It seemed to the boy that maybe the plant could live there. So the little boy put on his astronaut suit, and climbed into a spaceship. He put the little red flower in the back, and they went to the Moon.

Far away from all that pollution, and with the boy visiting it every day to take care of it, the flower started to grow. The flower was so well cared for that it soongerminated, giving birth to others, and these other flowers spread onto other flowers. Before long, the whole Moon was completely covered with flowers.

That's why, whenever the little boy's flowers open up, for a few minutes the Moon turns red, like a warning light. Maybe it's telling us that if we don't look after our planet, the day will come when flowers will only be able to grow on the Moon.
