In the 21st century, people often join a "group chat" on we Chat, share videos on Douyin and give opinions on Facebook. We live in a wholeheartedly. Being the international common language. English has lent itself willingly to be used on social media, experiencing many small but important changes during the process. What are the effects of the social media on the English language?

▲Old words but new meanings

When someone wants to post something on his "wall", why do we think of the homepage of his Facebook, but not the walls in his house? This is the magic of social media. We know "friend" is a noun, but now it's also used as a verb "Friended" "and "unfriended" mean the process of adding ordeletingsomeone from your list of friends.

▲__________________

Social media has invented new words like "selfie" or "emoji" to describe the new things. The most famous of these words perhaps is "google" which is used more than the old-fashioned simple word "search". Generally sneaking a new word should be in use for at least 10 years before being entered in the Oxford English Dictionary. However the dictionary officially included the word "tweet".

▲Introducing acronyms(缩略词)

LOL (Laugh Out Loud).OMG (Oh My God) and BRB (Be Right Back) are examples of acronyms, the same as (IDK) I Don't Know and (TTYL) Talk To You Later. We need them to be short in length on social media, so we use acronyms to take the place of these phrases.

Social media is without doubt here to stay. In the future, it's likely to develop to a greater degree and take the English language along with it on the road of development.

Have you ever wondered why some people live long, but others don't? Many scientists have studied the secret of a long life for years.

Thousands of studies support the idea that a long life is influenced by two major things.

It's no surprise that the gene(基因) is a major influence. Some people's bodies simply have special advantages. They have parents and grandparents who lived long lives. Their parents have passed on these positive genes to them. Howard Friedman is a health scientist. With h1s research partner, he wrote a book about living a long life. He says genes explain about 1/3 of why people live to an old age.

The other major influence is basic health care. Good food, clean water and medical care all help a lot. For example, a person getting vaccines(疫苗) has a better chance or avoiding many serious diseases and staying healthy.

People cannot change their genes. And it's difficult to improve a whole community's healthcare system. However, the new research results show there are things each or us can do to help improve how long we live.

Many studies show that having a sense of purpose is important. For example, in Okinawa, Japan, plenty of people are over the age of 100. They have an idea called ikigai or life purpose Scientists believe it's one of the reasons why Okinawa has so many long-lived people.

Staying active is the second important personal quality (品质). It's not the same as doing difficult exercise. Instead, it's the most important to remain active in a natural way, doing something you enjoy.

Another quality is helping people. When researching the effects of love, scientists expected to find that people who felt loved would live longer. But this wasn't what they found. Feeling loved made people feel better. However, loving and caring for others did make people live longer.

The final one is conscientiousness (尽责). Conscientious people plan for things and think about details. Of all the personal qualities, conscientiousness shows the strongest link(联系) to a long life. Some people believe being conscientious means living a boring life. However, the opposite is true. Scientists say that being conscientious and hard-working makes many wonderful chances.

I was on the high school basketball team. I practiced with the team. I ran out on the floor and warmed up before the game started and then I sat on the bench(长凳) cheering for members who were actually going to play in the game. When we won, I hugged my teammates.

I enjoyed that, but I didn't know how my dad felt about my bench-warming role. We never talked about it. I supposed it was hard for him. My dad played basketball in college. He was fast and strong and he could jump like a kangaroo. And my older brothers were sports stars at college. I was not sure how he felt about going to games just to watch his son sit. Still, my dad was always there, usually standing in a corer of the gym. I'd make eye contact with him during the pre-game warm-up --it would have been uncool to smile or wave. And then I forgot about him until after the game - and the hugging- when he'd come up to me, smile, shake my hand and tell me, "Good game!" even though I never actually and anything to make the game good. It changed in the last game of the season.

It was a great day for our team - we were up by about 20 with two minutes left. The coach suddenly looked towards me and said. "Walker! You're in!" The next two minutes seemed not real to me.I remembered running up and down the field a few times. When someone started counting down the last seconds, my teammate assed the ball to me. I heard people on the bench shouting" Shoot(投篮)!" as I faced the basket and shot. We won. But then I didn't know what to do. I was unprepared for a time when I had hit a last-second shot. Naturally, I looked for my dad. And he was there, where he always was, smiling at me as he always did.

Through good times and bad, my dad was always there to smile, to encourage, to support and to love. I came to depend on that, even towards the end of his life when smiling was about all that he could do. It helped to know that, no matter what, my dad was there.

Now I'm the one who is in my 50s trying to keep pace with a teenage basketball player in my family. To be honest, I'm not as good at it as mv dad was. But I keep trying because I know how much it can mean for a Dad to be there when his son hits the big shot, or especially when he doesn't.

Teenagers are the most dangerous drivers on the road. Teaching them to drive carefully is very important in helping them become safe drivers. Cellphones and friends can very often lead to accidents, but there are other factors(因素) affecting teenage drivers, like lack of (缺少) sleep, drunk driving and not wearing seatbelts(安全带).Parents can set rules to help children stay safe on the road.

★Encourage teenagers to avoid speeding. It is the most important rule to educate them. Driving too fast is very common among teenagers and is perhaps the easiest way to break traffic laws. Teenagers should be required to avoid speeding and not to ride in a car with anyone else who speeds.

★Ask teenagers to always wear a seatbelt. Whether a teenager is driving or not, he or she needs to be asked to always wear a seatbelt. If the teenager is old enough to have passengers, ask passengers to wear seatbelts, too.

★Always set limits (限制) on the number of passengers. You and your teenager must agree on a set number of teenagers as passengers, but the number of passengers should not be larger than the number of seatbelts in the car.

★Set a fixed time for your teenager to be home. There should be a clear time when the teenager needs to be home. Then they will be more careful when they are in the car.
