Mini-me is what I called my daughter Micah. We used to do many things 1 . But these days, "I'm Good" is about all she says to me. Code for "Leave me alone".

"Why doesn't she want to do things with me?" I thought as I set the table for 2  one evening.

"Mom!" Micah cried 3 . "Come quick!"

I 4  out and found a little baby bird on the ground. My eyes went to the branch above. For the last few weeks, we had watched mockingbirds make a nest and 5  eggs there.

"The wind must have 6  him out of the nest, " I said.

"No, it was Mr. Whiskers—our cat. You let him go outside!" Micah said.

"I'm sorry," I said and put the bird back. Happy to put the incident behind us, we went inside. Micah hopped on her iPad. "More cat videos?" I asked.

"I'm 7  what to feed it, " she said. She was more focused than ever. I wished she had been half as 8 in me.

"It needs a(n) 9 , " Micah said.

"How about Chance?I think he has a good chance of 10  it with your help. "

"I like it, " said Micah. Finally we could 11  something.

Early the next morning I got up to mix the bird food Micah found on the Internet. But the breakfast wasn't 12 , because his mother was back!

Micah kept close 13  on him. Weeks later, we went to check on Chance. The nest was empty. Chance was seated proudly on nearby branch. He was a(n) 14  bird.

Micah isn't a mini-me, I realized. She is her own person, 15  more independent every day.

Where can teenagers go for a meal in London? We have some suggestions for great places to eat out in the capital.

The Original Hard Rock Cafe

There are Hard Rock Cafes all over the world, but this is the first one. It's a great place, with guitars, clothes and photos from famous rock stars. You can have a look at the interesting things in the restaurant, listen to good music, and enjoy delicious American food at the same time. There's also a shop where you can buy various gifts and souvenirs, such as Hard Rock T-shirts.

The Rainforest Cafe

Welcome to the Rainforest Cafe—an exciting place to eat right in the middle of the city! It's like a rainforest with lots of trees, water, fish and birds, and all the sights and sounds of the jungle. Imagine eating a great meal there! There are food options for vegetarians and vegans, and food allergy sufferers too. So, there is something delicious for everybody on the menu.

5th View

This is a fantastic cafe on the fifth floor of Waterston's bookshop in Piccadilly. It's a very elegant and relaxing place to eat in the center of London—with a great view of the city! You can see out over the whole of London while you eat. You can also read a book from the bookshop at the same time. You can have breakfast, a snack, coffee and cake or a three-course meal—anything you want.

Wagamama

Go to Wagamama for wonderful Japanese food. Noodle bars are very popular in Japan, and now you can find them in the center of London and all over Britain. This is fast food with a difference—you can't have hotdogs or hamburgers here. You sit all together at long tables and order your food. Many years ago, in 1971, the US table tennis team was at the World Championship(锦标赛)in Japan. The team from the People's Republic of China was also there. This championship took place during the days of the Cold War and so the American and the Chinese players didn't even talk to each other.

Glen Cowan, from the US team, didn't like the situation. One day, he saw a Chinese player and invited him to play. They played together for 15 minutes, and Cowan missed the US bus back to the hotel.

Then, something surprising happened. One of the Chinese players waved to Cowan from the Chinese bus. He thought for a moment and then he got on the bus. But they didn't talk with each other. Suddenly Zhuang Zedong, three times world champion, came up to Cowan. "What are you doing?" said the other Chinese players. "Don't talk to him! Don't make trouble!" Zedong gave Cowan a silk scarf. "I give you this to show the friendship of the Chinese people to the American people." He said through a translator. Cowan wanted to give something back, but he didn't have anything with him.

Then the bus arrived at the hotel. There were lots of reporters. It was big news to see an American and a Chinese player together.

Later, Cowan bought a T-shirt with a peace flag on it, and he gave it to Zedong. The two men became friends. In the same year, the US team got an invitation to visit China, and in February 1972, US President Richard Nixon went to China on a historic visit. Many people say that the two men and their friendship made a better relationship between their countries possible.

If you bought some bread months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it is still safe to eat?The common way is to check the "use-by date". If that date has already passed, you're likely to throw the bread away. But is that really necessary?

According to a new report from the US Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don't fully understand what "use-by dates" actually mean.

Food dating was introduced in the 1970s because consumers wanted more information about the things that they were eating. When they first showed up, use-by dates were only supposed to show freshness because producers wanted their products to be tasted in their best conditions.

But the truth is that these dates aren't related to the risk of food illness, according to Time News. However, most customersmisinterpreteduse-by dates and related them to the safety of the food, and they still largely do now. Eggs, for example, can still be eaten three to five weeks after selling even though the use-by date is much earlier. When their use-by dates pass, strawberry drinks may lose their red color and biscuits may lose their crunch(松脆), but they are not harmful.

This is why scientists are calling for a standard(标准的)explanation to be printed following the use-by dates. "We want this to be clearly communicated so consumers are not misunderstanding and causing a lot of waste, " said Dana Ganders, a staff scientist with the NRDC. But this won't be a mistake that is easy to correct since people have believed it for so long. Another problem is that the quality levels of different foods change differently—some are still safe to eat long after their use-by date while others are not.

As a result, food industry officials are now thinking of changing the use-by date to a date indicating(指示)when food is most likely to go bad.

HGH(Human Growth Hormone)could be the favorite drug at the next athletic world championships, and we might never know it. It is a natural substance(物质)produced by the human body, and it helps children's bones and muscles(骨骼和肌肉)to grow. Scientists are allowed to make the drug and it is also common to take HGH in most countries. HGH is considered a wonder drug for children. It helps many children with growth problems every year.

However, some athletes are now taking the drug. HGH helps add muscle in adults and recent research by the World Anti-Doping Agency shows that HGH may improve a runner's time by 5%. Some athletes say that HGH surely makes them stronger. It also helps them to recover more quickly from injuries.

Although it is banned(禁止)by most professional sports, HGH is almost impossible to test for. The drug is completely natural and it will only show in tests for around 24 hours after taking it. Testing is usually done only during competitions, but athletes use HGH during training, so it is very difficult to know who has used the drug. This makes it very attractive for some athletes. Scientists are developing a new test which will find the drug in the body for up to two weeks. But it isn't going to be easy. Everybody has different levels of natural HGH in their body.

For this reason, scientists are warning athletes of the possible problems with the drug. Research shows that HGH can give people headaches, pains and—more dangerously—bigger hearts. Finally, high levels of HGH increase the risk of cancer. But is this enough to stop athletes from taking it? Scientists don't think so. Some athletes will do all they can to win, and worry about their health later.
