Whales are the biggest creatures that have ever lived on the earth. They are even bigger than the biggest dinosaurs (恐龙) were. Scientists think that whales once walked on land. They believe this because whales are not fish—they are mammals (哺乳动物).

Not only are whales the biggest creatures on theearth, they also are some of the smartest. They live in family groups. They communicate with each other, and look for food in groups. Mother whales keep their babies close by, and help them move in the right direction.

Sometimes a whale will lift its head out of the water just to take a look around. Because whales are mammals, they must breathe (呼吸) air. They breathe through a blowhole on their back. However, they can hold their breath for a very long time. Some kinds of whales can hold their breath for two hours at a time. Whales never really sleep. Instead, they swim along with their blowhole above the water.

Many kinds of whales move to warmer waters during the winter months. During the summer, they build up a layer of fat so that during the trip they do not have to eat. Bears also eat during the summer to build up a layer of fat so that they can sleep during the winter. Some scientists think the prehistoric (史前的) whales may have looked like huge bears.

 阅读理解

Henry was so nervous. He didn't sleep well. It was the first day back to school. Now, as the big yellow school bus ran up to the school, he felt like a prisoner (犯人) being dropped off at prison. There was a fence around school. There were people telling him what to do and when to do it. There were big bad kids waiting to pound (揍) him. He couldn't leave when he wanted to, either.

Henry was more nervous as the kids around him got out of their seats and began heading to the open door. As he walked down the steps to get off, he wondered what his teacher would be like. It would probably be a scary man this year. The guy would be like 300 pounds, like a football player.

As he walked down the hall he wondered about his classmates. How awful would they be? They would probably be wild like gorillas. Each one would be stronger, louder, and worse than him. They'd pound him around and eat his cookies because they didn't like him. It would be horrible.

He stepped into the room. A pretty young woman stepped over, shook his hand and smiled.

"I'm Mrs. Stacey. Nice to meet you, Henry, right?"

Henry blinked (眨眼) in surprise. "How'd you know?"

"We've been waiting for you. " She answered warmly.

Henry glanced around the room. Smiling faces all looked up from their clean desks and they looked friendly. The room was decorated brightly and nicely, and no one looked like they wanted to pound him.

Maybe it wasn't going to be so bad after all, especially since they had chicken for lunch.

We all know how to enjoy our food. However, have you thought of what happens after a dish has been served to the diner? The ideal (理想的) picture would be this: the chef sees his hard work being rewarded (回报) when the plates are empty after the meal. Sadly, thingsare not like that. You can see unfinished food on plates left on the tables almost every day.

My dear students, this is not good. It shows that little thought has been put in stopping food wastage (浪费).

Let's learn from a chef in a Japanese restaurant who says that he will always respect (尊重) the fish he cooks. Why? Simply because he knows the dangers which the fisherman always faces in order to bring the fish to him. Therefore, by not wasting any part of the fish, and by cooking excellently every time, the chef is respecting the fisherman's work.

Similarly, we should respect our food more. Just think of the poor and homeless who have not eaten for days because of a war or a natural disaster (灾害). Think. Wouldn't it be good if we shared our food, instead of throwing away what we can't finish?

Now, the Environmental Club would like our students to help peopleinneed. Instead of buying lots of food you might not be able to finish, buy a small amount; you can also take food from home. Give some of your pocket money to the Club so we could buy some food or biscuits to give to the needy; or, you could give some of these food to the Club if you have any at home.

So, I hope to see every one of you playing your part to stop food wastage. Respect your food and share the joy of living well through giving food to those in need.

Students in the U. S. sent a small boat into the Atlantic Ocean in October 2020. It was a school experiment (实验) to see where the ocean currents (洋流) would take the boat. The boat was 1.8 meters long and had a satellite positioning system, or GPS.

A Norwegian student found the boat on February 1, 2022, on a small Norwegian island. He took it to his school. There were some autumn leaves and pictures in the boat.

The American students are planning a call with the Norwegian students soon. The students worried many times that their boat had gone missing. It stopped communicating with the satellite. However, the boat started showing where it was again inthesummer of 2021 when it was near Ireland. On January 30, 2022, it seemed to have reached land.

One of the American students who sent the boat out, Molly Flynn, said she was "surprised the boat actually made it somewhere. " Flynn said she was worried the boat would get lost in the middle of the ocean. She called it "cool and surprising" that it was found.

The teacher, Stymiest, who started the project said: "When you're sending it out, you have no idea where it's going to end up and how it's going to get there, if it ends up anywhere at all. " Stymiest said the students "put their hopes and dreams and wishes into it, and I think sometimes that helps. "
