The following 4 famous paintings, from Jan van Eyck's portrait to Pablo Picasso's masterpiece, have stood the test of time.

The Arnolfini Portrait

Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait, an oil painting on wood produced in 1434, is undoubtedly one of the masterpieces. This painting is as visually interesting as it is famed. It is also an informative document on fifteenth-century society, through van Eyck's heavy use of symbolism-while husbands went out to engage in business, wives concerned themselves with domestic duties.

The Starry Night

Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night, oil on canvas, a moderately abstract landscape painting of an expressive night sky over a small hillside village, during his 12-month stay at the mental hospital. When the Museum of Modern Art in New York City purchased the painting from a private collector in 1941, it was not well known, but it has since become one of van Gogh's most famous works.

The Harvesters

The Harvesters is an oil painting on wood completed by Pieter Bruegel the Elder in 1565. It describes the harvest time which most commonly occurred within the months of August and September. Nicolaes Jonghelinck, a merchant banker and art collector from Antwerp, commissioned this painting. The painting has been at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City since 1919.

Guernica

Guernica, a large black-and-white oil painting, was painted by the Cubist Spanish painter, Pablo Picasso in1937. The title "Guernica" refers to the city that was bombed by Nazi planes during the Spanish Civil War. The painting shows the horrors of war and as a result, has come to be an anti-war symbol and a reminder of the tragedies of war.

Before arriving in China, I had read various books relating to China, famous Chinese novels as well as non-fiction and the seeds of my fascination were sown. Therefore, when I arrived I couldn't have been more excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. The food, the landmarks, the fantastic cities and everyday life-I was burning to explore.

Yet despite my enthusiasm, learning Chinese hadn't even entered my mind. This wasn't ignorance or laziness, but rather fright at the thought of attempting to learn what is regarded as the most difficult language in the world. In my mind, the Chinese language was the privilege of the highly intelligent.

However, after a year in China I began to feel uncomfortable with how many Chinese people could speak English and yet I couldn't even speak the most basic Chinese. With these factors in mind and a thirst for a new challenge I determined to begin my language journey.

In the two years since starting to learn I have made measurable progress. I found it less difficult than thought. When speaking to native Chinese speakers in Chinese they almost always understand me, I have also not found it too difficult to remember characters and I am now even able to write over 400 characters. I find studying the language relaxing and rewarding.

In spite of my progress, it has still been the challenge that has taken a lot of hard work and commitment. The thing I find most discouraging is listening since native speakers talk at such a speed, I can't always understand what's been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this. Furthermore, there is a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency. The key to progress is to be patient and persistent.

My biggest harvest from learning Chinese is that it's not only reachable but can also be enjoyable. Learning Chinese not only helped me in day-to-day life, but deepened my cultural understanding of such a diverse and interesting country. Now my only regret is that I didn't start earlier.

By now, most people know they should be eating more vegetables. But are there ways to get more from the vegetables you already eat? A research shows that when it comes to vegetables, it's not only how much we eat, but also how we prepare them, that decides the vitamins and other nutrients that enter our body.

Many studies show that people who eat lots of vegetables have less heart disease, and eye problems and even cancer. But raw vegetables are not always best. The researchers found that 198 Germans who eat raw food were short of lycopene, the matter found in tomatoes and other red vegetables. "There is an idea that raw foods are always going to be better," says Steven K. Clinton, a professor at Ohio State University. "For fruits and vegetables, sometimes a little bit of cooking can be helpful."

A number of factors decide how the vegetables do good to people's health before they reach the table, including where and how they were grown and stored before being bought. No single cooking way is best. Some nutrients are easily lost in cooking if they are cooked in different ways.

Vitamins C and B are often lost. In January, another report said that boiling was better for carrots than frying or serving them raw. Frying was the worst way to cook.

What cooked with the vegetables can also be important? When the vegetables were cooked with fat, the diners can get more nutrients. Fat can also make the taste of vegetables better, meaning that people will eat more of them. Putting on some other things that make it taste better—a little salt—can make the food taste better.

The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its wooden roof have been largely damaged. The terrible accident causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world, "What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore."

But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely via a video game called Assassin's Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before the fire. In addition, with VR technology, which is already quite mature, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage.

The idea of digitizing ancient buildings, making digital models of them so their data can be saved, dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers, building 3D models with hundreds of images, as well as measuring everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as "same" as the real one.

As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital replica or digital copy has great practical value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them, which helps protect them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting it in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics. Even if the original ones are damaged one day, people can still know what they were like and can build a replica if desired.

Time is the biggest problem to architectural heritage. Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural cultural heritage at the moment.

The biggest complaint of the modern world is not having enough time to read. It's because advance in technology has made reading less interesting.

But I often left many novels halfway for lack of time. I decided to take reading seriously. Here are some strategies that actually work even when I have a tight schedule.

Set a Reading Goal.

Having a dedicated reading goal can aid in developing a regular reading practice. Set a simple, attainable, and just slightly challenging goal for yourself. I changed it to "read at least 30 minutes daily" in March. You can create any goal that suits your needs for the month and do your best to stick with it.

Change Your Habits.

Already existing habits are hard to break, If you already have a habit of scrolling (浏览手机) before bed, replace that habit by reading instead. Pick up a book whenever you are tempted to open your phone. Or create a"cue" (提示) for your mind.

Track Your Progress.

I used to put a mark on my calendar whenever I lived up to my reading goal. Witnessing my progress helped me in keeping my morale (士气) up.

I hope this quick little list helps you in getting more quality reading done this year. However, that doesn't mean you need to read more books.

A. Remember to have fun while reading.

B. But there are enormous benefits of reading.

C. Like everyone else, I hoped to get a ton of reading done in 2021.

D. In February, I made the goal of reading at least 10 pages a day,

E. Even people who are keen readers struggle to make the time to read.

F. I always keep a book on my bedside table to ensure I pick it up before sleeping.

G. Even if you spend just 5 minutes truly enjoying a story, or a poem, you're doing it right.
