When Alex Lin was 11 years old,he came across an alarming article in the newspaper highlighting the improper handling of e-waste,such as burying outdated computers in backyards and throwing cellphones in the garbage.This is dangerous as e-waste contains poisonous chemicals and substances that can leak into the environment,getting into crops,animals,water supplies,and even humans.

"I was deeply concerned,"recalls Alex.He immediately conducted a survey to assess the situation in his town.The results were astonishing:Among the respondents,only one in eight even knew what e-waste was,let alone how to properly dispose of it.

Determined to make a difference,Alex  immediately  set up a project under  WIN,the organization he had established with his friends two years prior to address community issues.The WIN team publicized their efforts in the local newspaper and distributed notices tostudents,urging residents to bring their unwanted electronics to the school parking lot.They successfully collected over 21,000 pounds of e-waste,including outdated computers from the school system.Following this,they established a permanent e-waste drop-offcenter.

Recognizing the imporance ofreuse,which is seven times more efficient than recycling,Alex and his team began exploring ways to refurbish(翻新)the old computers.He persuaded his school to integrate computer refurbishment into the curriculum,enabling students to collect,restore,and distribute 260 computers to children in need

Realizing that a drop-offcenter alone was not a sustainable solution,Alex took his efforts to the state level in 2006.He spoke at the state house,advocating for a new e-waste bill that would outlaw the dumping(倾倒)of e-waste.Along with other supporters,he engaged with lawmakers,presented slideshows,and gathered over 370 signatures.Ultimately,the bill was passed into law.

Thanks to the efforts of individuals like Alex and his team,the message of safe e-waste disposal is gradually gaining attention.As Alex states,"Today's technology should not become tomorrow's poison."

Beyond the clear benefits for rail  operators  and  passengers,autonomous  trains  will  bring significant benefits to society.That is because more efficient traffic management will mean increased train frequency and improved services in crowded areas.With more than 55 per cent of the world's population in cities  today—and  with  nearly  70 per  cent  projected  by  2050,addressing  urban transport issues is critical.

It is no coincidence that the crackdown on remote work is happening as some industries cool. Job cuts across Wall Street and Silicon Valley have handed power back to businesses.However,even in tech and finance some employees  are  standing  their  ground.In  May  Amazon  said  that  300 employees staged walkouts over the e-empire's return-to-work policies.

Other firms are quietly adapting with the times.Deloitte and KPMG,two professional-services giants,want to reduce their office footprint in favour of more remote work.The gap between the two sides of the work-from-home battle may yet narrow.The question is whether the bosses or the bossed will yield the most.
