Has anyone ever told you that eating carrots will help you see in the dark?

This is just one of many incorrect beliefs you may have heard. Below, a newspaper has picked out scientific explanations for three mistakes that people make about their eyes. Let's take a look.

Can eating carrots improve your eyesight?

Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which helps the eyes to turn light into information for your brain. This allows people to see in darker places.

However, eating more carrots won't help you see better. A certain amount will help, but a large number of carrots will not give you superhuman eyesight.

If your parents have bad eyesight, will you have bad eyesight, too?

Myopia(近视) can be passed from parents to children.

A study by the American Optometric Association found that if both parents aremyopic(近视的), there's a 33 to 60 percent chance that their child will be. For children who have one parent with myopia, the chance is 23 to 40 percent, and it's down to 6 to 15 percent for kids with non-myopic parents.

So if your eyesight is bad, your children might still have good vision.

Do color blind people see the world in black and white?

Color blindness doesn't usually mean that people see the world like an old movie. They usually can't tell certain colors from each other, especially green and red. Another commonlyconfused(困惑的) pair of colors is yellow and blue.

Our eyes havecone cells(视锥细胞) that sense differentwavelengths(波长) of light. If these cells don't work properly, color blindness happens.

There are different levels of color blindness. Some people are only color blind in low light. However, in the most serious form of color blindness, everything is shades of gray.

Chinese delivery driver, Gao Zhixiao, appeared on the cover of Time magazine in March because of his great sense of duty. Alongside five others, he was picked by the magazine as one of the heroes during thenovel coronavirus(新冠肺炎) outbreak.

After COVID-19 broke out, many restaurants turned to takeout-only services. Millions of people have been staying home to avoid gettinginfected(感染的). "People choose to order food online or buy fruit and vegetables to cook at home," Gao told Time. As a result, delivery ordersdramatically(显著地) increased, placing a huge burden ondelivery couriers(派送员).

Born into a poor family in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, Gao started to make a living in Beijing at the age of 16. After the novel coronavirus broke out, Gao thought for a second whether to continue working, but then picked up orders because he thought customers might be in need.

In order to keep off the danger of person-to-persontransmission(传播), Gao must takeprecautions(预防措施) to avoid spreading viruses during his route around Beijing, including taking a regular health test and spending 20 minutesdisinfecting(消毒) his motorcycle and clothes each morning. Besides delivering goods, Gao once warm-heartedly cooked for an elderlycustomer(顾客) who was living alone at her home.

It is the commitment of ordinary people like Gao who have made the biggest contributions in the fight against COVID-19.

Have you heard of the word "hygge"(小确幸)? It's Danish, representing a lifestyle practiced by Danish people.

There is no English word for the exact meaning of "hygge", according to Oxford Dictionaries. It might be translated to "comfort" in English, but it is more than that.

Enjoying beautiful music or having a movie night is hygge. Lighting candles or making real tea in china cups-that's hygge too. There's nothing more hygge than sitting around a table with your family or friends, discussing the big and small things in life. Hygge pays attention to making ordinary daily activities special or meaningful, according to the BBC.

For Danish people, hygge is a way of fighting the cold winter, although it doesn't have to be a winter-only thing. In Denmark, there can be up to 17 hours of darkness per day in winter, and the average temperature is around 0℃, according to the BBC. As a result, people spend more time indoors and relax themselves.

Now the idea of hygge is traveling abroad and becoming fashionable in some other countries too. In the United Kingdom and the United States, there are more and more hygge-themed cookbooks and lifestyle guides, as well as Danish restaurants, cafes and bars.
